African Green-Pigeon (Treron calva)

African Green-Pigeon (Treron calva)

Sex; alike. Age; adult. Subspecies; possible schalowi. Udzungwa Mts, July 2007. Copyright@; Louis A. Hansen. Feet and legs are red, green tail and underparts "relatively" yellow, this should indicate the mentioned subspecies, however, not entirely sure. Poor photo - yes, but the photo does give some information to the bird watcher, like; overall a compact bird, short wings, bird moves very fast - often you just hear them pass by before you have a change to get them in to focus with your binoculars.

The birds came to roost in a riverine tree. The first couple of days only a few then increasing to at least 14 individuals - they were singing too - a very pleasant song, but often difficult to hear - as the song is very low pitched. Song resembles the song I have heard in India from other species in this complex of "green-fruit-pigeon." The seems to have chosen this particular stand of high tree as the sun’s rays left this spot as the last place (they turned their backs towards the sun – possible to absorb a little heat before the night). They left the roost early in the mornings.
