Collared Sunbird (Anthreptes collaris)
Sex; male. Age; adult. Subspecies; possible garguensis. Udzungwa Mts, July 2007. Copyright@; Louis A. Hansen. The subspecies garguensis is supposed to occur in western Tanzania. Females in most subspecies have a yellowish chin and throat - close to the colour of the rest of the underparts. Among some of the subspecies even females have iridescent-green chin and throat. The taxonomy of sunbirds is rather unstable - in the sense that many different genera name have been used in the last few years (see e.g. Birds of Africa and Cheke et al.'s book on Sunbirds). I have been conservative and used the genus Anthreptes here.
