Red-chested sunbird from Mwanza

by Michael Lund Markussen last modified 2008-01-23 23:59

I got this picture of a sunbird in my parents garden in Mwanza. It resembles the Marico sunbird, but has elongated tailfeathers. Can anyone identify it for me?

The Red-chested Sunbird is the common long tailed sunbird around the edge of Lake Victoria but have to agree that this shot would provide ID problems were it not for the elongated central tail feathers.

Hi there. Did it end here? I would rather suggest a red-chested sunbird (erythrocerica), do admit I do not know neither the size of the bird shown on the picture or have nor any experience with the species. However, there are a few characters that would suggest red-chested: bluish upper back, relative long tail and medium long central tail feathers.

Sorry if this has been sorted out long time ago - I have been away. If it has, then ignore this note and please add the final ID. Many thanks, Louis A. Hansen
