The male utters the call while flying off the branch and then makes a complete horizontal circle and while exposing the area of white feathers on the back. The "song" is typically uttered at dusk. In the background a very persistence Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo is heard. The call of the female was not recorded. Recording from the Udzungwa Mts. 1991-92. Copyrights @: Louis A. Hansen and the late Jens Otto Svendsen.
African Crowned Eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus)
The birds fly up and down in curves/loops while uttering the sound to mark their territory. This makes the volume alternately falling and rising. Recording from the Udzungwa Mts. 1991-92. Copyrights @: Louis A. Hansen and the late Jens Otto Svendsen.
African Firefinch dawn song
This clip of the dawn song of African Firefinch was recorded in mixed woodland (Acacia/Commiphora/Combretum/Brachystegia) with a thick understory of Lantana bushes and Hyperhenia grasses at Kigwambimbi, Iringa on 22 April 2008. It was originally (miss) identified as Jameson's Firefinch as this is the only species that had been recorded at this locality over the past 10 years. However, this year it was pointed out to me by Jeff DaCosta that African FF was also present. As the habitat thickens and woodland regenerates at Kigwembimbi, it would appear that African FF is replacing Jameson's FF.
African Goshawk (Accipiter tachiro)
African Goshawk (Accipiter tachiro). You will hear a sound like "quid - quid" or "(h)wiid - (h)wiid". This is a common display call which is heard e.g. just before sunrise. Recording from the Udzungwa Mts. 1991-92. Copyrights @: Louis A. Hansen and the late Jens Otto Svendsen. This is a TEST - I want to hear from you if this is too big a file for you the user.

Bar-throated Apalis (Apalis thoracica)
Bar-throated Apalis (Apalis thoracica). You will first hear two birds dueting – one produce a rapid series of “chatter-like” notes the second bird replies instantly with a different and much shorter “chatter”. Half way through the sound file only one bird is calling (still same pair of birds) – yet another set of note and very different from the dueting series. Recording from the Udzungwa Mts. 1991-92. Copyrights @: Louis A. Hansen and the late Jens Otto Svendsen. This is a TEST - I want to hear from you if this is too big a file for you the user.
Barn owl-like Owlet
I have recently been to some coastal forests in the Sadaani NP area, Nr Bagamoyo and in Mlola on Mafia IS (1 night only). I got some owl recordings in both. Some sound scops owl like and I would like to get hold of a Sokoke scops owl recording. Interestingly there was no African Wood Owl heard on Mafia. I attach three recordings . AWP00010 sounds barn owl like. AWP00021 , sounds scops owl like. AWP00197 from Mafia Island could be barred owlet. I plan to go back to Kisampa when it is a bit drier - alot of black cotton soil there. Be great to get some IDs on this. Andrew Perkin
Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo (Cercococcyx montanus)
Presented: two types of song (or just two half's of the song). The song sounds very persistent some would maybe prefer to call it "rather annoying". The second type of song usually follows the first. And is normally not just part/type of the song. The song can be heard at a long distance in the peak (?) of the breeding season it is sometimes heard for several days during the nights too. Recording from the Udzungwa Mts. 1991-92. Copyrights @: Louis A. Hansen and the late Jens Otto Svendsen.
